Let's Play: 5 Tips for a Fun Family Session with Kids

As a mom, I can attest to the fact that I RARELY am in front of the lens with my kids. This isn’t due to the fact that I’m A photographer, but I’m just the de facto photographer of the house. Even without being professional photographers, most moms are! Add that to the fact that, honestly, I don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera so I rarely ask for pictures.

That’s why capturing moments with your kids with a professional photographer is so important. We need that #proofofmom!

Sessions with your little ones can be a delightful experience, but it's no secret that the very same session (within the same hour… or even minute sometimes) can sometimes be challenging. Their boundless energy and unpredictable behavior can make it a bit tricky especially if you’re going for that “perfect” posed family photo. However, with some careful planning and a touch of patience, you can turn your photoshoot into a fun and memorable event.

Here are five tips to make your session with kids easier and (hopefully) more enjoyable:

1. Choose the Right Time and Location

Selecting the right time and location can significantly impact the success of your photoshoot. Consider your child's schedule and choose a time when they are generally well-rested and less likely to be cranky.

Yes, natural morning or evening light produces the best results with respect to shadows and Golden Hour, so we do recommend early morning or late afternoon when the sun is softer, but we always try to work with you on the best time for your littles. Luckily, as we head into the fall season, sunrise and sunset become more manageable times!

When it comes to the “where,” select a location that is familiar and comfortable for your child, such as a park or their favorite play area or even your home! You’ve made memories there and capturing those memories can make for an even more special session while also helping put your little one at ease.

2. Involve Them in the Process

Make your child feel like an active participant in the photoshoot by involving them in the decision-making process. Ask for their input on poses or let them choose a location within the chosen setting. Let them choose their own outfit (sometimes, this is a risk if you have a rainbow/glitter/unicorn/Paw Patrol/dragon kid). Maybe just let the choose an outfit from some pre-selected styled options.

Whatever choices you give them, this sense of ownership can help them feel more comfortable and cooperative.

3. Engage in Playful Activities

We always try to keep the mood light and playful by incorporating fun activities into the photoshoot. Bring along their favorite toys, bubbles, or balloons to capture genuine smiles and expressions. Engaging in activities that they enjoy will help them feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera.

When it comes to kids, we always aim to get a couple posed family portraits, but the rest of the time is for skipping rocks and swinging to the sky. Depending on the kid, it’s often good to do these early before we lose their attention OR do them a little later when they’ve had time to warm up to us.

4. Be Patient and Flexible

Children can be unpredictable, and that's part of their charm! We always want to be patient and flexible with them. We want them to explore and express themselves freely. We always try to avoid pressuring them to pose in a certain way, as this can lead to frustration. Instead, let the moments unfold naturally, and be in the moment so we can capture them when they happen.

5. Bring Snacks and Comfort Items

Hunger and discomfort can quickly turn a happy child into a grumpy one. Pack some snacks, drinks, and their favorite comfort items like a stuffed toy or blanket. This way, they can take breaks when needed to refuel and recharge, ensuring a smoother photoshoot experience. My go to snack (for older toddlers and kids) are mini marshmallows! They don’t make a mess and generally, are a novelty that they don’t get often at home!

With all of this, we like to focus on the candid moments. With all of the tips above, your child can be happy just being in front of the camera and being themselves. The most important thing is to just have fun. Let them be themselves and document the candid moments of play, laughter, and exploration. These images often convey genuine emotions and tell a more authentic story.

Remember, the goal of the photoshoot is to capture the unique spirit and personality of your child. Embrace their quirks and individuality, and cherish the memories you create together.

With a little planning, patience, and creativity, you can turn your photoshoot into a joyful and memorable adventure. Happy shooting!
